Understanding Botox® Cosmetic Treatments
Botox® Cosmetic is the first and only FDA approved product designed to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and moderate to severe crow’s feet in adults.
Wrinkles develop over time from repeated facial expressions like frowning and squinting. Botox® targets the muscle activity beneath the skin that causes these lines and temporarily reduces movement, leading to visibly smoother skin.
Therapeutic Use of Botox® for TMJ Symptoms
While Botox® is often associated with cosmetic treatments, it is gaining increased recognition for its off label, therapeutic use in managing TMJ disorders and related symptoms, such as jaw tension, clenching, and teeth grinding. For patients struggling with chronic discomfort, Botox® offers a non-surgical and minimally invasive way to reduce muscle overactivity and provide meaningful relief.
Research and clinical use has shown that Botox® can help the jaw muscles involved in TMJ dysfunction, which may reduce pain and improve jaw mobility. Botox® is helpful for those who haven’t responded to traditional therapies like mouth guards or physical therapy. It’s important to know this application is considered off-label and may not treat the root cause of TMJ, it can be an effective option to manage symptoms when used alongside other dental or therapeutic treatments. Many patients find that Botox® gives them needed relief from chronic jaw pain, helping improve sleep, reduce stress related clenching or grinding, and support their broader treatment plan
If you think Botox® might be a helpful option for managing jaw discomfort or TMJ symptoms, the next step is to talk to qualified provider. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Khan to learn more about whether this treatment may be appropriate for your unique situation.
Understanding Juvederm® Dermal Filler Treatments.
Juvederm® is a popular brand of dermal filler used to restore volume and contour to the face. Unlike Botox®, which relaxes muscles, Juvederm® works by physically filling in wrinkles and hollow areas to create a smoother, more youthful appearance. Our clinic uses dermal fillers to fill moderate facial wrinkles, restore volume to cheeks, and enhance lip fullness. Speak to your doctor about you concerns during your complementary consultation to see if Juvederm® is right for you.
What to Expect During and After Treatment
Botox® Cosmetic injections are typically painless and do not require anesthesia. Most patients return to their usual activities immediately after treatment. Mild bruising may occur but usually fades quickly.
The effects of any cosmetic or therapeutic injectables we offer are not permanent. Treatments may need to be repeated a few times per year to maintain results. Long term use has been associated with longer lasting effects over time.

Is Botox® for TMJ a standalone solution?
While Botox® can significantly reduce TMJ-related symptoms, it does not address underlaying causes like bite misalignment, stress, or structural jaw issues. It is best used as a supportive therapy in a broader treatment plan. See our TMJ treatment page for more info.
Is Botox® for TMJ FDA approved?
No. Using Botox® to manage TMJ symptoms is considered an off-label application and has not been specfically approved by the FDA. Clinial studies and patient outcomes suggest. it can be effective when used by trained professionals alongside other therapies.
Are the injection sites for TMJ different than cosmetic Botox®?
Yes. TMJ targeted injections are typically placed in the masseter, temporalis, and other jaw muscles, where as cosmetic Botox® is commonly injected in areas like the forehead or around the eyes. The goals and placement differ based on function versus aesthetics.
Is recovery different for TMJ related Botox®?
Recovery is generally similar regardless of treatment purpose. However, patients that choose Botox® for TMJ may notice muscle fatigue or changes in jaw tension as the target muscles begin to relax. These effects are temporary and often part of the therapeutic process.
